The YC interview is not a pitch. It is ten minutes of rapid questions designed to test whether you understand your users, your market and your own numbers.
Questions you should expect
- What are you building, in one sentence?
- Who desperately needs this, and how do you know?
- How many users do you have, and how fast is it growing?
- Why are you the team to build this?
- Who are your competitors and what do you understand that they don't?
- How will you make money?
- What's the hardest thing you've done so far?
What good answers sound like
Short, specific and numeric. 'We have 40 weekly active users, up from 12 four weeks ago, and 6 pay $49/month' beats any vision statement.
💡 If an answer takes longer than 20 seconds, it's a pitch. Cut it.
A 5-day prep plan
- Day 1: write one-sentence answers to the 20 most common questions
- Day 2: memorize your numbers — users, growth, revenue, burn
- Day 3: do a timed mock interview and record it
- Day 4: fix every answer that was vague or long
- Day 5: second mock under pressure, then rest
Velocirator's Simulation Mode runs a timed 10-minute, 15-question mock interview and gives you a verdict and score.
